Markets for aquaculture products: Present status

Eating fish reduces heart diseases - Today this is well known. Seafood importers and distributors are seeking reliable sources of supply. The world trade in seafood is huge, estimated at US$100 billion per year, and the main markets in the USA, EU and Japan import more than 50% of their requirements. New seafood products are arriving in the markets, shipped fresh or frozen from all over the world. hotels, supermarkets and fish markets require increasing quantities of products to satisfy the demand.

The main criteria for marketable aquaculture products are:

  • Price
  • Consistency in quality
  • Consistency in supply
  • Freshness
